pharmacodynamics:
Iron is the main component of hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin is the main oxygen carrier in red blood cells. Myoglobin is the oxygen storage site in muscle cells that helps provide oxygen to the muscles during exercise. Most of the enzymes and factors involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle contain iron or function only in the presence of iron. Therefore, in addition to accelerated hemoglobin synthesis, the symptoms related to tissue iron deficiency and decreased iron-containing enzyme activity, such as growth retardation, abnormal behavior, and physical insufficiency, can be gradually corrected after iron supplementation in iron-deficient animals.
pharmacokinetics:
Pharmacokinetic injection of iron, absorption is faster than oral; After intramuscular injection, the plasma concentration of dextrose ferritin reached the peak 24~48 hours after intramuscular injection, and its molecules were larger, which were absorbed by lymphatic vessels and then transferred to blood, and the plasma concentration increased slowly. Injected intravenously or intramuscularly, absorbed into the blood circulation, it is phagocytosed by the monocyte-phagocytic system and decomposed into iron and dextrose. After absorption, ferric ions are oxidized by ceruloplasmin in blood to ferric ions, which then bind to transferrin receptors and enter cells in the form of pinocytosis for use by hematopoietic cells, or in the form of ferritin or hemosiderin accumulated in liver, spleen, bone marrow and other mononuclear phagocytic systems. Protein binding rates are high in hemoglobin, low in myoglobin, enzymes, and proteins that transport iron, and low in ferritin or hemosiderin.
Iron dextran is used for prophylactic and treatment of by iron deficiency caused anaemia in piglets and calves. Parenteral administration of iron has the advantage that the necessary amount of iron can be administered in one single dosage.
Indications:
Prophylactics and treatment of anaemia in piglets and calves.
Contra-indications:
Administration to animals with vitamin E deficiency.
Administration to animals with diarrhoea.
Administration in combination with tetracyclines, because of the interaction of iron with tetracyclines.
Side Effects:
Muscle tissue is coloured temporarily by this preparation.
Leaking of injection fluid can cause a persistent discoloration of skin.
Administration and Dosage:
For intramuscular or subcutaneous administration:
Calves: 4 - 8 ml subcutaneous, in the first week after birth.
Piglets: 2 ml intramuscular, 3 days after birth.
Withdrawal Times:
None.
Storage:
Store below 25ºC, in a cool and dry place, and protect from light.
